Unlocking Tomorrow’s Leaders: Energy, Inspiration, and Connection at the DuCAP Teen Leadership Conference

Energy, excitement, and the sweet smell of fresh pastries filled the Romeoville Athletic Center as youth from across the area gathered for the DuCAP Teen Leadership Conference this past April. Enthusiastically hosted by Romeoville High School seniors Ben Smith and Sienna Grant, the event kicked off on a vibrant note as students had the chance to mingle, break the ice with new peers, and power up for an action-packed day. The crowd was delighted by sweet treats brought in from Donut Den, which set a warm and welcoming tone right from the start.

For many attending students, the April conference served as an eye-opening introduction to DuCAP and its vital mission in the community. As teens bonded over shared interests and team-building exercises, they gained a deeper understanding of how DuCAP supports local youth through mentorship, volunteering, and empowering leadership opportunities. The inclusive environment allowed participants to step outside their comfort zones, build lasting friendships, and realize the positive impact they can make when teens work together.

At the core of the day was a focus on personal growth, where students unlocked practical skills on what it truly means to be a leader. Participants had the privilege of hearing from two outstanding guest speakers-Mike Rodgers of Geodis and LaJuan Ducksworth of Love That Balloon Decor & More-who shared their authentic experiences, challenges, and triumphs along their own leadership journeys. Their powerful stories helped the teens discover that leadership isn't just a title—it is about communication, resilience, integrity, and inspiring those around you.

Beyond the insightful lessons, the conference delivered plenty of interactive and fun moments—most notably during an unforgettable rock, paper, scissors tournament. What began as a lighthearted activity quickly turned into an intense, edge-of-your-seat battle of strategy that had the entire crowd roaring with excitement. Romeoville High School student Emily Salazar rose to the challenge, battling through the bracket to claim the ultimate championship victory amidst loud cheers from her peers.

The remarkable success of the Teen Leadership Conference was a true team effort made possible by the incredible support of our sponsor Geodis along with community partners VOR TV and the Romeoville Athletic Center. Massive credit goes to the dedicated teens from the Romeoville teen leadership group whose hard work and enthusiasm behind the scenes ensured the conference ran smoothly from beginning to end. Between the valuable life lessons, thrilling competition, and new connections, the DuCAP Teen Leadership Conference showed just how bright the future is with these rising young leaders taking charge.
